San Benito may be small in numbers this season, but the team will be strong, physical and athletic

It will be, no doubt, one of the smaller rosters the San Benito girls volleyball team has had in recent years.

No matter.

Although just 10 girls cracked the varsity lineup this season - down from the usual 15 - the lack of bodies hasn't changed much, if anything at all, in the way San Benito operates or what it expects.

Former world champion Mike Lee, famed bullfighter Shorty Gorham and former world champ turned Nashville recording artist Justin McBride - not to mention the bucking bulls that make it all possible - will all be in action when the Professional Bull Riders Touring Pro Division invades Bolado Park on Saturday, Sept. 4.

Local lifter raises the bar

In just the third meet of his career, Nick Mendizabal set a state record in powerlifting

Seeking an ideal body weight of 165 pounds, Nick Mendizabal's goal, he said, will be to bench press about 305 to 310 pounds at the world championships in November, or roughly 190 percent of his body weight.

On the surface, it's perhaps a surprising percentage to most, especially considering Mendizabal recently started his junior year at San Benito High School, and had his very first powerlifting competition in April.

Golf tourney set for Bolado
The Gerald Rawn Memorial Golf Tournament, awarding annual scholarships to the Boys Scouts of Troop 436 since 1999, will be held Sept. 25 at the Bolado Park Golf Course, located at 777 Airline Highway in Tres Pinos.

Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies scheduled for 11:30 a.m. A shotgun start will happen at noon, with a Court of Honor and steak dinner slated for the 19th Hole at 5 p.m.

Cost is $85 per player, which includes golf, a cart, a goodie bag, lunch, a banquet and awards.

Awards will be given out to the top three teams, closest to the pin, longest drive and any hole-in-ones, which will be awarded a Harley Davidson. Raffle items include a round of golf for a foursome, a 42-inch LCD television, a wheel barrel of beer, wine gift baskets, a Cleveland wedge, golf GPS and much more.

Frys.com announces Jamie Lovemark will receive sponsor exemption
Frys.com Open tournament director Ian Knight announced Tuesday that 2009 Frys.com Open co-runner-up, Jamie Lovemark, will receive the second sponsor exemption for the 2010 Frys.com Open. Knight will hand out a total of eight sponsor exemptions for the tournament, scheduled to be played Oct. 11-17 at CordeValle in San Martin.

"Lovemark is a talented California native who currently sits atop the Nationwide Tour money list," Knight said. "His achievements in 2010 alone make him the perfect candidate for a sponsor exemption, not to mention he was runner-up at the 2009 Frys.com Open."
